Cadance ascended. And Nightmare Moon saw an opportunity to form this new alicorn into a pawn. One that can watch over the Empress’ domain during the day, ensuring her will is enforced among the diurnal ponies.
That doesn’t change her nature as the Princess of Love, though. And Shining Armor being her personal guard gives Twilight an “in.”

This is not the same NMM, however. She’s been partially reformed. Still kinda ruthless, but not the same monster we know and love.
Well, that’s the point I am trying to make. Nightmare Moon, being head strong and wanting to keep her adoration, would more than likely, and perhaps wrecklessly charge into battle, rather than negotiate, both out of fear and ignorance of her own limits.

Perhaps the negotiations/appeasement could just exist to buy time until she strikes for real, I’ve heard people use this explanation to justify similar actions in actual history (Munich agreement in 1938) but seeing as Sil’s NMM would likely be a little too confident in her own strength, or simply arrogant, which may lead to some fairly unpleasant consequences.
If you think about it, Luna/Nightmare Moon wanted the respect of her subjects. She felt if the Night lasted “forever”, they would come to admire her night.
So, in that sense, regardless if Celestia returned or not, when Sombra and the empire returned, if she were to even relish the thought of surrendering any of her kingdom to Sombra, she would lose the love and respect of her subjects. Most likely she would determine the best way she sees fit to defeat the dark king, but would probably be wary of considering the use of the elements of harmony.
That’s just my opinion though.
Would be interesting if NMMs first response to Sombra’s return was to open negotiations with the possibility of her selling out much of the north to keep the peace/alliance..
I mean, what? No, her glorious majesty would never do such a thing, she cares too greatly for her subjects.
I ignore him because this particular AU takes place around the same time as the first episodes of season 1. The Crystal Empire is still hidden away as per the actions of Celestia and Luna before Luna turned into NMM.
It’s a damn shame Silfoe ignores Sombra. It’d be interesting to see him in this universe, for he would . Is he still the warlike tyrannic warlord he is in canon or he could even be the unlikely nominal/byronic hero who will lead an open revolt against the Nightmare?
I imagine Luna’s/Nightmare’s rule would be very similar to that of Celestia, except more militaristic.
After all, Nightmare didn’t want to rule a barren wasteland and her only issue was Celestia in the spotlight.
Also, coups like this one by Nightmare are VERY common in our history and nothing really changed for the country, except for the name of the ruler in the history book. Some were cruel, some were kind, some were overthrown right back.
And you want to see a REAL tyrant in Equestria? Try Sombra before he got all cooky with crystalssssss…

Fiction in general has a hard time portraying why tyrannies are bad, especially when the alternative is supposed be a different tyrant that is somehow good. A tyrannized land takes some exploring to understand how and why things are terrible. Is Rarity obligated to pay bribes to keep her business license? Does AJ have to give up half her crop as tribute? Are either or both worried that a pro-Celestia remark made at home might be given away by their sisters at school? Proper tyrannies are places where freedom and safety must be bought with daily indignities and can be capriciously stolen away.
We haven’t seen too much of this universe yet though. We’ve mostly just seen Twilight’s & Luna’s interactions with each other.
Which is actually my big issue with this particular comic of Silfoe’s. Even with an immortal, self-centered tyrant sitting on the throne, everything is… pretty much the same. It feels like the “core” Royal Sketchbook universe is more original (and to me, at least) more interesting than this.
I wonder if her ponysona is still the royal mail sorter in this ’verse too?
You know, in the first panel of this comic page, I can imagine Big Mac yelling “SCOOTALOO!!! LITTLE OLD LADY AT TWELVE O’CLOCK!!!”
I mean, this is an alternate reality, so who’s to say he doesn’t talk more in this reality……. oh right, Silfoe has the say. (Gasp) Silfoe should make an alicorn version of their ponysona, and make an appearance in one of their comic, just for comedic results. Though I can’t really force Silfoe, so, oh well.
Looks like the latter.
Oh, and nice to see the more things change, the more they stay the same…
