It’s worse than that – the stream is implied to suppress all emotions, leaving one without the ability to feel strongly about anything, good or bad. It’s somewhat like being lobotomized. An extreme solution to the “catching everything around them on fire” problem.

That part in the episode is actually horrifying when you think about it. The Kirin all thought they were going to do something helpful, but being forced against your will to stop all verbal communication?
