I heard a theory that says had they not lost their knowledge, we would have been on mars by now.

Pretty sure they didn’t lose much of anything. By the time the Euros first appeared even during what’s considered the dark days of the Qing Empire they were not impressed.

Nah il never take history or culture “too seriously”
in fact. i like to study it once in a while, China is absolutely no exception either.
and yes! you are right! china did invent gun powder and many many other things. not bad for a country that was once in a seven way civil war.
 
Its massive civil wars and its invention of gunpowder were not at the same time mind you. Though also some of its massive old public works were war time things to free up manpower in the long term.
 
When Euros were Fielding armies of a few thousand, China was fielding armies of tens of thousands.
