My main issue with this episode isn’t so much that Fluttershy finds Nightmare Night frightening – I get how that would work; as I understand it, Fluttershy is the type of person who can overcome fright and frightening situations when she needs to, but would not seek them out for their sake alone and certainly not for fun. She can endure fright, but she doesn’t like it – and since Nightmare Night, much like Halloween, is about experiencing frightening things for fun, I can see why she would not enjoy it.
 
No, what confuses me is that she consistently acts as if she is in real danger for her safety – her fears tend to be less about not wanting to run into jumpscares and monster themes everywhere and more about being afraid that she’ll be attacked by actual monsters. Her reasons for backing out of the activities and for not wanting Rarity’s costumes are that she thinks they’ll keep her from spotting danger or defending herself.  

 
That’s the part I really don’t get – that belief that she is genuinely in danger for her safety. There’s no in-universe reason for her to think that she’s in actual physical danger during Nightmare Night, and narratively speaking that sequence would have achieved the same aim with her just reacting negatively to sudden scares, scary decorations and the general atmosphere of Nightmare Night – especially since it’s shown that a lot of activities are geared specifically towards scaring people to begin with.

Her cowardice is one of those terribly selective weaknesses.

She tamed a Manticore, she confronted and defeated a minotaur just with words and even could reform the Lord of Chaos, the tornado for bring water to Cloudsdale reached its required size thanks to Flutty.
 
Fluttershy is stronger than it seems, but everything goes to the trash in Scare Master, showing her afraid of candies…
