Description

Pristine Melody was engaged to the stallion of her dreams. She should’ve been the happiest mare in the world, but she wasn’t.

It wasn’t that she doubted their love—no, she loved Cursive Quill with all her heart, and there was no question that he genuinely loved her too. But then again…she had felt the same way before for somepony else. And everypony knew how terribly that ended. Who was to say she and her Quilly would eventually end up the same way? Who was to say she wouldn’t get her heart broken again? Was love really worth that risk?

”Mel?”

She was snapped out of her thoughts by a strong, but gentle hoof brushing over her back. Despite her worries, she melted into her fiancée’s soothing touch.

”Dear, are you alright?”

“Yes, Quilly,” Mel gave a halfhearted smile. “Just thinkin’, is all.”

”What about?” Cursive seated himself next to her on the couch. “You know you can always talk to me.”

There he goes again, Mel thought to herself. Her Quilly was always so open and honest, such a good listener, she couldn’t hide anything from him. Not that she’d want to, anyway; he had always been a good pony to confide in. He was patient and understanding, and so easy to talk to.

”It’s just…I’ve been thinkin’ about our marriage comin’ up. I love you so much, Quilly, with all my heart, but…” She took a shuddering breath, “I don’t wanna lose it. I don’t wanna lose it like I did last time. How do we know we ain’t gonna wake up one day and decide we don’t love each other anymore, like she and I did? How do we know we ain’t gonna break each other’s hearts? Is…is it even worth it?”

Cursive paused for a moment, seeming to ponder her words. “Well…we don’t know. There’s no telling what the future will bring. But you know what I do know? That I love you now. So much that I asked you to be my wife.”

”I know, Quilly. I love you too, it’s just-“

”Maybe we will stop loving each other one day, maybe we won’t. I know my first wife and I did. It hurt, but we cherished every moment we did have together. All 15 years of it. That’s why we lasted so long,” he smiled. “But why worry about what might happen? All we have is here and now, might as well enjoy it. How about a dance?”

“Of course,” Mel smiled she let Cursive pull her up onto her hooves. She moved along with him to the opening bars of the song on the radio, letting herself get lost in his embrace.

“And I need you to know you can fall into me, that my arms are wide open and will always be…”

And as Cursive began to sing along, Mel realized that this was what their relationship was all about. The pain of the past and the uncertainty of the future didn’t matter with Cursive Quill; the only thing that mattered was the here and now. And Mel knew that right now, she could trust him to be there for her. She could trust him to catch her when she fell. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

”Right here waiting, staying strong. Come and fall into me~“
