Ask Movie Slate - Corman Month - Little Shop of Horrors

This is one of those pieces where my client indulged me a lot on. I’m not sure if you’re noticing, but Treehugger is keeping Movie Slate down by pushing one of her hind hooves down on her. I mean, come on. Those of you who know me shouldn’t be surprised by that, but yes. I was about to put Treehugger’s hoof on Movie’s muzzle, but I thought that would’ve been too on the nose ::8Brimshot:
 
So “Little Shop of Horrors” is great. I guess there is really no way around it, but I found this movie to be quite delightful. Let’s get the biggest issue out of the way first, which is the pacing. For a movie this short, that doesn’t have that many twists and turns, it’s very weird that it felt so slow. I’m not sure if it’s due to the amount of dialogue the movie had, or because of the theatrical feel of it (it works like a Broadway musical, with the stage set very plainly and almost flat). But that’s where my issues with the movie end, and I could write everything else off as just simply inspiring. The comedy is on point almost all of the time. The shop owner, Mr. Mushnick, might as well be my favourite character in the movie, but poor Seymour isn’t too far behind, or Audrey (the human not the plant) who’s so oblivious of the events around her even when they are being so obvious. Even the plant has a strong personality, even if one dimensional, but it’s a plant! It should have no personality at all!
 
With a shoestring budget and tons of ingenuity, this movie manages to be memorable only by sheer power of charisma and some very messed up scenes. Pacing issues aside, this is a very easy recommendation. Give the movie a go if you ever have the chance!
