They changed the battle system completely. Instead of facing an endless amount of enemies and then fighting the boss when you want to, you are constantly facing the boss. Every hit on the boss both fills the bar up needed to beat it and gets you more sapphires.
The only way to get sapphires and not attack the boss is by collecting the ones that appear in your town. This is a much slower process then just having your ponies attack the endless enemies.
I got the same amount as him since I didn’t want to risk running out of time and I wasn’t completely sure how many hits were left. The idea of the gem conversion was the furthest thing from my mind.
