Busy procrastinating
“The ships were one of the most expensive parts of the film. For the totals of Canterlot, we used the same model as always and models of the ships plus a bit post-prod. But for the scenes shot in Canterlot, we needed full-scale models of at least three ships. Green screen and letting post-prod add the ships was out of question, we had tried that, but it didn’t work on the big screen. What made matters worse was that the Storm King’s ship had to be able to move, needed a movable ramp, and of course, it had to be made so that Fizzlepop and Grubber could walk out of it.

As for the interior shots, we did them on a stage and not inside that model. See, the Storm King’s ship is a kind of TARDIS, it’s somewhat bigger on the inside. We did make a second model of the ship for the escape scene. Oh, speaking of that scene, wanna know why Fluttershy is always seen in the background? Because she’s the only one whom we had to replace with a stuntpony. Pinkie and Dash, on the other hoof, were willing to help us with test shots of that scene.

The only other scene we’ve shot on a ship model is the deck scene on Celaeno’s ship. It was Murdock who said that it’d look a great deal better if we actually built an entire ship model for that scene so that we could also do off-deck shots. This, however, required a model of the Storm King’s ship for the attack part again.

We had to use that ship model earlier in the film for the Klugetown escape scene. We wanted to do it all on a chroma-key stage with post-prod adding the actual town, but for obvious reasons, Rainbow Dash and chroma-key don’t mix, so we had to build all of Klugetown as an outdoor stage in the San Palomino Desert. Parts of that scene had to work on the first take, we couldn’t redo them because we destroyed half the set. It has meanwhile been fixed and become a popular tourist trap.”

“The funny thing is, Party Favor wasn’t even meant to have any lines when the ramp came down and broke Brian the Balloon. He kinda just acted on the spot for laughs. When the director saw this, rather than getting, obviously, frustrated, just had a belly laugh. He later said that would be added into the final film and they’ll just cut to a different take before the actors all broke out laughing”
