True, Vengir, but it’s our best shot at the moment. Beside, we know how many syllables are on both sides, and thus we know exactly what was written, giving us reasonable confidence?

There is one flaw in your theory though. You assume that contemporary Ponish (or Equestrian) has a word that is used like English “the”. There are already languages on Earth that don’t have articles in them and pony language could be just like that.

The past few years, I’ve thought Earth Theory might not lead anywhere, it’d simply mean Equestria’s tech originates from a species that died off hundred thousands of years ago, and that’d be the end of the story. Though, any hundreds of space-time plotlines can connect the two easily, I suppose. X3

If I still believed in Earth Theory, I’d like to think Old Ponish is actually Earthling English after a few hundred thousand years of alterations. ;3

The correlation on the leftmost side in the middle does not work - this is good if we are thinking of this as an accurate translation, as ‘the’ should not be in that red text.

Now, let us take a moment of silence for any logical reading frame. Equestrians read from right to left, then left to right, then vice versa. Unless that rightmost correlation is the correct one, in which case they read solely from right to left.

As for why Twilight’s ascention spell looks so different - I like to think that most of what we see equestrian writing wise is ‘low resolution’.
