Really though I have to wonder why they just didn’t adopt. Adoption gets mentioned so rarely in fiction, do people have some sort of a grudge against it?

Not sure of the context, but I’m guessing those are supposed to be other ponies in a social gathering - and her perception is they are judging/mocking her, even if they aren’t outwardly doing so.

EDIT: Okay, well >>1825926 give a lot more background on this character, and probably helps explain this situation.
