I’ll point out the main characteristics of Starlight Glimmer’s ideals and compare them to Communism’s.

1. Equality. The biggest misconception. In Communism you are not the same as others in every term. You are the same in the eyes of the State, meaning that everyone has equal rights, possibilities, and that (basically) every one is counted as one person when the State has to distribute “according to the need” the goods produced. Individuality is not touched!
2. Talents. In Starlight’s ideal, no-one has a talent. That means that everyone has the same ability to do something and that, if someone is replaced by someone else, there will be no difference.

However, the key sentence of Communism is (and I wrote half of it in the first part): “From each according to ability, to each according to need”. Hence you must have a talent to do something. I always do the same example: if in a Marxist state, you are good at playing the piano, the state will provide you food, house and a music school where you can become better. Then you’ll give back what the government gave you by doing concerts in the future.

3. Dictatorship. Starlight is the leader of the town, she chooses things and no-one can be of opposing opinion. Communism is not dictatorship. Everyone is part of the government and at councils says what is the need and what can be produced. No more.

But she’s using her talent and gets paid for it. As in “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”. This in no way goes against the communist principles.
