Description

Originally Trixie was not scheduled to be in this episode (this bit was going to happen later, and involve Twilight going undercover without telling Skywishes), but after trying (and failing) to get caught up on the MLP episodes that I’m behind on, I realized that it would fit my theme for this arc better if I were to use her. Plus providing an opportunity to give an in-universe explanation for why Trixie was Cadance’s apprentice instead of Starlight’s (the real explanation being that Starlight hadn’t been reformed yet when I originally wrote this issue). She’ll be appearing more in future episodes, filling the role in the overall plot of Luminara Unduli.

This page gave me a certain amount of difficulty with scale. Normally I just have the problem of putting regular-sized ponies next to princesses, but now I had to have a regular pony, a princess, and a full-sized dragon in the same panel, while attempting to give some idea of their relative sizes, and I think I failed miserably. Technically Ember should be much, much bigger than this, but I can’t make her be her proper size and still fit her into a panel with the ponies. And Trixie’s hat, cape, and fluffy mane and tail take up an awful lot of space on their own. Unfortunately I can’t dispense with the cape because she looks weird without it.

when in doubt, use perspective boxes. sketch the three to scale right next to each other, then draw perspective boxes around them going to a vanishing point. if you draw a second box closer to the vanishing point, the character must fit entirely in that box at that distance. and anything at equal “height” on the paper (assuming a horizontal horizon) is the same distance away.
