Finally, the crux of the problem. Spike here, he’s young, confused, easily led but not really ready for commitment. Nor should he be so; even though he seems to be far and away the most responsible and mature of the lot, he’s still very inexperienced. Starlight…she’s far more complex, and actually very conflicted. She wants dragon boy, and she’s almost subconsciously drawing on her old manipulative and domineering side to get it. She wants to be a good pony, she wants Spike to be happy and to make his own decisions, but she’s gone past emotional desire, and even past lust.

This is passion. Fighting it just creates a emotional and physical feedback loop. Utterly giving in allows it to become consumptive, even destructive. Passion needs to be focused, disciplined, channeled. Then it can become something of worth and beauty.

I can’t believe I pulled out a screed like this over a silly webcomic about pastel ponies. Life still can pull surprises.

What I do not understand is because this became the turning point of the relationship of Spike and Starlight, that is to say, it is quite normal for one to end up on top of another when sleeping in the same bed. It made more sense that after waking up, Spike is scared, but Starlight keeps flirting and later Spike decides to talk to her again about their feelings.

Is this real? I can’t tell with all the teasing anymore.

Point of interests:
  • Spike admitted, YES!
  • oh shot, Spike admitted, I feel bad for Lily
  • Starlight and Spike know they were in bed together; why is this freaking them out now?
  • I notices Starlight didn’t answer Spike
  • WHY didn’t Starlight answer Spike!!!!!

Spike and Lily’s relationship is perfectly fine, it even has its cute and comfy moments. It’s just that their interactions just seem to be missing the kind of passion that exists between Spike and Starlight. Could Spike and Lily’s relationship last? Sure, but I don’t think it would last nearly as long or be early as fulfilling as Spike and Starlight’s could be.

This is both painful and a relief at the same time. It sucks that there’s definitely going to be heartbreak involved, but I think it’s better for both Spike and Starlight in the long run.

I think spike and lily are adorable. lily loves him, and I would hate to break her heart. but she fell in love without even knowing him. and in trying to be a good boyfriend, spike’s hurting the one who really needs him.

I think that’s what hurts the most about this. starlight doesn’t really have any other options. the way starlight warms slowly to others, she can’t just fall in love without getting to know someone well. unless fate contrives that she’s forced to move in with sunburst or something…

society really punishes people who are slow to warm, because it’s “dangerous” and “tempting” to have close relations with others you aren’t in love with. there are so many barriers keeping males and females apart, you’re pretty much expected to fall in love with a stranger like lily did. starlight needs spike, because she’s not going to have a lot of other opportunities. I hope she doesn’t end up like me. I’m so lonely…

I agree, I got nothing against her. But it feels as if she was shoehorned in just to be Spike’s love interest in making Starlight jealous.

I don’t see that at all. It was a very slow process that Lily came into being and it took a lot of time that her character was developed and their friendship built. She wasn’t just thrown in and by the next episode they were together… like so many shows do for convenience. She was built up overtime just like Starlight was.
