I don’t think it’s news that Hollywood has been a haven for depraved, predatory producer fatcats who don’t have “no”, “stop” or “rape” in their vocabulary.
I read that the head of the studio propositioned her once in his office by whipping it out right in front of her…but little Shirley just giggled (probably a mixture of nervousness at this occurrence, and innocently having little idea what was going on at that age) and he sent her out of the office to get on with filming.

There was also a certain amount of sexualisation going on in front of the camera - the way she’s handled by all the pilots during the routine of the “Good Ship Lollipop” song can certainly be viewed that way by audiences today, and that doesn’t even come close to the Baby Burlesk shorts.
Anyway, if you do a bit of research, including watching the song sequence that OP is referencing, you’ll learn how Temple was sexualized behind the scenes.
Actually, she retired from acting in 1949, aged 21. And then returned to it later when she made the Shirley Temple’s Storybook series in the 60s.
Actually kid actor meltdowns are rarer than people think. Is just that cases when it happens are very loudly screamed by the sensationalist media, attracting a lot of attention. Most just retire from the public view and go on to live normal lives…
Shirley Temple though, never left the public view:
Meet the 27th Ambassador of the United States to Czechoslovakia, Shirley Temple, in 1990.

Shirley Temple was one of those rare cases of a famous child actor NOT self-destructing in their teenage years. She stopped making movies after 14 or so, ended up marrying a childhood friend, and went on to live a perfectly normal, fairly mundane life. It seems too good to be real in this jaded age, so folks love to make up a “dark backstory” for her even though none existed.
According to the known accounts, no, she was quite nice. She became a politician as an adult, though.
cozy.
I think that’s just the irresistible urge to juxtapose a public persona that’s all sweetness and light with a private persona that’s straight from Satan’s taint.
XD
They like it loud.
Maybe a little bit jazzy sometimes.
