Rainbow Brite had a reoccurring villain who tried to drain all the colors out and make everything grey, named Murky Dismal.

So Grogar isn’t an MLP villian from G1, but a Rainbow Brite villain from who-cares-when?

Just an update, according to an interview with Tara Strong, nothing is planned past the 2021 movie at this stage, and it sounds like she is involved with the movie.  
And the 2021 movie only entered production in around December 2018, according to Hasbro, compared to the film described by the leak having begun production in 2017. Heck, Boulder is still putting a team together to work on it.  
It sounds more and more like that leak is inaccurate on some level, sadly.  
As for the special, I meant on more of a franchise view. If the leaks are inaccurate, and since this special is confirmed to not be FiM, this may well be what MLP will look like. Perfectly fine in my view, this special was really really good. Though…I do hope Hasbro does another regular series…

I doubt G5 will look like this mostly because this was in a production for a year and a half but I guess it’s still possible

By their description, sounds maybe more like Battle of the Gods or the Super Broly movie. Technically canon, just not set within the show, at least not yet. It sounds like this might even be the forerunner to whatever is coming after the show.

It is actually canon, surprisingly! FiM is just a part of MLP Generation 4 though, and this is may be the first bit of pony canon set after the show. And yeah, I have to admit this special is one of my favorite pieces of MLP content, period.

They may say that, but I’m sure most of us will still choose to view as part of the G4 continuity. If they didn’t want to be canon, they should’ve just made it a comic.
 
Not to mention, it’s better than the majority of ‘canon’ content season 9 has given us so far!

Hasbro and boulder actually answered this, so the the official answer is below.  
According to them, this is not a part of Season 9, or even the show. This is not a Friendship is Magic special, it is a My Little Pony special. It is based off, or inspired by, FiM, like the live show will be.  
That actually makes this, technically, the first post FiM content, ever!  
And from my opinion, this may give us a hint as to what MLP’s next era looks like.

I think, that this event have happened during season 9 : episode “STUDENT’S COUNCIL”

I think it is, in the same way Best Gift Ever is part of season 8

I wonder if this is setting something up for post-Season 9?  
The whole thing smelled of the Shadow Pony thing from Castle Mania…  
Maybe this will be the big challenge in Twilight’s reign.
