She sat in her starting position, surrounded by her competition. They all sat comfortably in front of the starting line, awaiting the flag to fly down and start their race. The anxious air fluttered around the competitors as the word ‘set’ filled their ears. Their rumps raised in the air, anticipating what’s to come. A million thoughts ran through Daze’s mind as she stared at the cloud track underneath her hooves, trying to get in the zone. Her mind fixated on one thing, which made her determined.
“Your wing is broken, Golden. I can’t let you~~”
“I got this, Ali. Don’t worry about me.”
The Pegasus searched for any emotion in her earth pony friend, as Ali just let out a huff.
“You know, you’re not supposed to be flying with a broken feather, mate.”
“Finnie, I’m fine.”
“It’s true, Dazey. You gotta listen to them! I played a game with a broken leg, and it didn’t end well for me.”
“Shotty, that’s you. That isn’t me.”
“Baby, no pony wants you more hurt.”
“Arty~~”
“Quit being so gosh-darn stubborn and get off your high horse, Golden! You can’t win with a broken wing.”
“Trust me- you guys really lack trust in your good ‘ol pal, huh? I got this.”
Her friends just stared at her, not trying anymore to persuade their stubborn friend. Daze was just irritated now, and trotted to the check-in station with her fellow racers.
“She better do this right,” her short farm friend muttered under her breath.
“Don’t worry about it, honey. She can do this.” The purple unicorn gave a look of security towards Ali, and nodded her head towards the stands.
Daze’s wings shot up when she heard the flag ruffle in the wind. Her wing was sore and hurt, but she knew she could do this. Her friends had to trust her. They just had to.
The flag flew down faster than the tan Pegasus anticipated, making all the racers shoot into the air and soar around the track. All her friends sat together in the bleachers, cheering on their wounded buddy. Their cheering boosted the Pegasus’s confidence, as every time she zoomed past them an especially loud ‘woosh’ blew them away.
Daze rounded the corner, coming up fast behind the three leading ponies. Her wing was cramping, as she flapped one more time to push herself past third place. As she passed the pony, she folded her wings in more to glide, keeping her pace and letting herself readjust to her broken feather. Her stubborn nature was already set in stone, which wasn’t always a good thing, but this time it was.
She glided past the last corner, catching up to second place and zooming right past her, determination rushing through her sweaty body. Her mane flew in the wind with speed, creating a brightly colored streak to fly behind her.
The last two stretches were coming up fast, as the pony behind her caught up and pushed her to the side, creating her hurt wing to get hit. Daze slowed down immediately, wincing in pain as her wing throbbed from the sudden contact. Every little thing filled Daze’s mind. She needed to win this. She couldn’t let her friends down. She couldn’t let her emotions get the best of her this time. She had to prove herself and her worth.
All her friends stood motionless as the racers past the Pegasus one by one. They didn’t know what to do in this moment, but watch in horror.
“I told that girl to not rac-” Ali was caught off by something that came into view. Daze was flying once again, but even faster, her determination and impulse pumping through her veins. Her competitive calling kicked back in full view, shooting her feathered body down the track and past her competitors. She forgot about her wing, as she raced past the bleachers. Her friends were cheering so loudly, no pony couldn’t hear anything but them. Ali’s cheering was louder than all the other’s..
Especially when Daze crossed the finish line in first.
Suddenly, a pink unicorn decked out in Daze’s apparel appeared near the group of girls, sweating and seeming to be exhausted.
“Sorry guys I was so late. I got called for a concert down in Las Pegasus.. Anyways, did I miss anything?” The selfish unicorn smiled at the four ponies.
“Yeah, you sure missed somethin’.” Ali just laughed out of happiness. For once she wasn’t a big grouchy asshole. Her friends joined her in laughter, in pure joy of their accomplished racer.
Maybe it was good to sometimes trust your stubborn friend.
God, I love drawing this girl. A cute dork in her uniform^^
Just something I wanted to get out. I wasn’t actually planning on writing a story with it, but I did anyway because why not? It’s a rare moment in time where all five of the girls get together to see their air sprinting buddy in a race. They normally fight and hate each other from how different they are from each other, but there is always that one blissful thing they all have in common: their love for Daze.
Base by the wonderful and amazing: (check her out!)
