Possibly horror, fetishistic elements, degradation, irony and other romantic themes. I mean, why not turn them into thralls to mine for said gold? That way they could get even more gold than that. It would change the meaning of the pic.

The theme “what has Science done!?”, or in this case the mixture of science and magic, has been done for a period much, much longer than you or I have been alive – the more horrifying or bizarre the idea, the more worthy of getting popcorn and being amused it tends to be.
