_{also for the record the first thing that came to my mind when I first saw “egg mode” was either Pokémon or Tamagotchi, I also don’t know anything about Pokémon since I never played the game, ever}

I know there are many subconscious aspects that influence identity, but until they actually become part of your conscious mind they can’t really be said to be “part” of it, just like how emotions aren’t really emotions until you experience them. The strings aren’t part of the main body of the puppet, but do play an essential part in its behavior  
as for the feeling of offness people experience, in today’s society there’s really no way of knowing if that feeling Is originally something related to gender identity or if it’s shaped into such a form later on. You have factors such as people confusing one feeling for another(which is especially easy when you’re younger), ex: a person might feel they don’t belong do to being an outcast but end up thinking it has to do with gender identity.  
In the end the whole memeplex containing transgenderism and related concepts is just a mess to unravel, especially with how rapidly it spreads and mutates

The concept of identity is far more complex than just what you’re actively conscious of, and includes many subconscious aspects as well. Many psychiatric phenomena can be rooted in or influenced by one’s subconscious identity, such as depression.
 
Regarding trasngenderism, t’s possible to have a feeling of “offness” in your self-identity without realizing that it’s gender related, and it’s also possible to think of yourself as one gender due to cultural influences while not truly being comfortable with that, all without realizing why.
 
It’s not uncommon for transgender people to have no idea where their deep seated identity confusion stems from until they find out that transgenderism is a real concept, at which point it just clicks.

That doesn’t make sense. How could someone Identify as the opposite sex and not know it when identity exists entirely in the realm of things you are consciously aware of.  
With identity itself being as aspect of conscious self-awarenesss
