Despite this, when he disagreed with Rousseau about his book which was basically saying “modern society sux ballz, we should be more like hippiez for teh win”, Voltaire basically wrote to Rousseau “how about we go eat grass while standing on all fours, sometimes?” (no, seriously, he literally wrote to him that they should eat grass on all fours).

The couple of folks I did talk to about Princess Twilight/Equestria Girls often said that I was the first person that really listened to them and took them seriously. I was shocked. Surely, with how prevalent that opinion seems to be, someone would be willing to listen?

It’s entirely possible to disagree on something and still be friends. It’s even possible to be great friends!
 
It’s just not going to happen in comment section debates.
 
Those kind of discussions are better one-on-one. Usually folks have a good reason for thinking like they do; it just takes some digging to understand another’s reasoning for arriving at that conclusion. It helps not to dismiss the other person’s point of view, and treat their feelings as valid. They’re probably not thinking the way they are just to antagonize you.
 
In fact, I think I’ve noticed that people usually keep bringing something up because it’s still bothering them, and no one is taking them seriously. No one is listening. Once I talked to my dear friend who hates Princess Twilight and Equestria Girls, and took him seriously, listened to and discussed all his concerns, he was finally able to put the issue aside and move on.
 
I sure wouldn’t like to be dismissed for something I thought was important, anyway.

If I want to say my opinion then I’m damn well saying it (depending on what it is). I don’t have to argue with people against it if I don’t wish to, it’s as simple as saying my opinion and leaving it at that….though I usually end up argueing.
