The movie hinted that these hippogriffs were unholy terrors. Celestia seemed pretty sure that they were all that would be needed to turn back the invasion. And then it took just one subadult to hold off the Storm King’s entire army on that staircase.
 
It’s strange that such dangerous creatures could be driven into hiding in the first place. The rest of the world should have been spending their days sweating nervously at the prospect of the dreaded hippogriffs reappearing. They should have been stories that parents tell their kids to scare them into behaving.
