I’ve been wanting to headcanon these two for so long and I finally did it! I hope y’all like my notes on them ^^

Sapphire Shores

As a young child, Sapphire watched her parents go through a pretty rough divorce and her father’s hasty abandonment of his ex-wife and daughter. She stayed angry with her father for a very long time, believing he didn’t care about her or her mother at all. But she let her blood boil in silence, knowing her mother probably didn’t need to be reminded about her situation. To make up for her father leaving, Sapphire Shores tried to be the best daughter she could, often doing extra household chores or picking up groceries from the market near their home in Canterlot. Her mother appreciated the hard work her daughter put in, but knew that Sapphire was desperately trying to replace what they were missing in their home.

Being a daughter of two business-savvy ponies, the last thing her mother expected was for her daughter to receive her cutie mark in performing. She knew her daughter always had to be over the top and dramatic in everything she did, but couldn’t believe an average mare like herself could be the mother of someone who was bound to have a big future ahead of her.

Sapphire Shores actually got her cutie mark from performing in a talent show at school, but it was the way that she made the stage her own that got her the mark. During the show, she made sure to go above and beyond with the costumes, set, and lights to create an absolutely dazzling performance.

Because of her mother’s career (a jewelry salepony), Sapphire had always been awestruck by gems and dazzle. Therefore, she loves using as much glitz and glam as possible whenever she performs. In a way, Sapphire’s brand is being as fabulously extra as possible.

Unfortunately, Sapphire Shores didn’t hear anything from her estranged father until she started to become a famous performer. Once her name started getting around, her dad decided to contact her and ask if she wanted to spend time with him. She gave him a short speech of “go take a long walk off a short pier” and told him not to contact her again. If he didn’t want to know her as a kid, he didn’t deserve to know her now.

Sapphire stays in Canterlot and rarely does tours through Equestria, knowing that ponies will travel into the city to see her perform. If she does decide to go on tour, it tends to be for a special event. Whenever she does travel, she makes sure Rarity creates a whole new set of costumes for her tour.

Sapphire Shores isn’t a particularly “basic” pet owner and has two small pythons, Razzle and Dazzle. Sometimes, she even has them on stage with her for a song or two to make her show more interesting. Even though some ponies believe her pets to be simple props for her show, Sapphire spoils them rotten with love and attention before and after her performances.

Sapphire is also sure to spoil her mother, wanting to repay her for years of taking care of her by herself. Sapphire’s mother, while she doesn’t ask for anything, never wants for anything anymore. Her daughter is more than happy to send her a small stipend and treat her to lunch and a shopping spree every so often.

Songbird Serenade

Born to mothers Whistleblower and Cake Walk, Songbird was a challenge from the moment she came into the world. Suffering from a rare condition called “anophthalmia” (which means the absence of eyes), Songbird’s doctors warned her mothers that their filly might not live past childhood from the complications that tend to arise from her condition. Whistleblower and Cake Walk ended up waiting over a month to bring home their daughter from the hospital after around-the-clock monitoring of the foal and once she was finally home, her parents were sure to give her the most full life they could offer her.

Even though her parents were very cautious of their little filly’s adjustment to a normal life, Whistleblower and Cake Walk made sure she could be as independent as possible. Even if they didn’t want her to thrive on her own, they didn’t have much of a choice. Songbird Serenade barreled ahead in everything she did, whether eating or walking or playing. Accidents were bound to happen without eyes and Songbird was usually covered in bandages when she was young, but she pushed on and acted like any other foal would. Before she had full use of her wings, her parents had a device made for her to help her avoid running into things (something similar to the device in this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThVXod… )

If anyone knew Songbird, they could tell you one thing: she never gave her condition satisfaction. She took chances, tried new things, and craved a cutie mark just like any other foal her age. Her parents let her try anything she wanted, unable to say no to their only child. Songbird was down to try anything once and ended up experimenting with activities like painting, hiking, sewing, gardening, and dancing. The one thing she seemed to have a knack for, however, was singing. She enrolled in lessons, which was originally thought to be short-term like the other things she had tried, and ended up sticking with it entirely. She received her cutie mark, not from singing, but from never giving up in any aspect of life. Songbird’s mark symbolizes bringing out joy even in the worst of situations.

Once Songbird was older and her wings had grown large enough to maneuver around her, she opted to use them like a seeing-eye device instead of the “bumpers” her parents had given her. While still not entirely graceful, the mare had grown well-accustomed to living life without sight. She didn’t ask for much help growing up, but her friends and family always tried making her life easier. If needed, they would wear small bells around their necks or walk with her to let her know they were there whenever she needed them.

Songbird chose to pursue a career in singing and became quite the popular vocalist, traveling from city to city to perform in small venues until she was a headliner. She was in the spotlight, especially in the media. She tended to be very open with her fans and reporters about her life and her condition, and started paving the way for ponies with disabilities. Songbird, with her growing wealth from such a career, hosts charities, fundraisers, and galas for those in need.

If she’s not performing or spending time with her fans, Songbird Serenade tends to lounge around and get comfortable. She lives for cozy sweaters, fluffy pillows, twinkle string lights, and her Persian cat, Puffin. Her tour bus is decked out for both her and Puffin, including plenty of comfy spaces and wall-mounted cat trees.

And here’s a little sneak peek into their relationship:

Sapphire Shores and Songbird Serenade actually met during one of Songbird’s many charity events. The theme of the event was “The More You Give, The More We Sing”, where ponies would donate money and every monetary goal hit a certain amount of songs would be sung by various performers of Equestria. Songbird’s manager had invited just about everyone they could think of in an attempt to raise more money and Sapphire Shores was one of the many who decided to participate as a performer. The two were introduced to each other before the event started and Sapphire was blown away by Songbird’s energy and spirit. Everyone ended up having a wonderful time, and Sapphire said she looked forward to working with Songbird again soon.

The two ended up doing some duets together for albums and performances, or would be headliners for one another during a show. They became great friends and bonded over things like their pets and their parents. Whenever either one was in the same town as the other, they would make sure to make lunch plans and catch up.

When Sapphire decided she wanted to try pursuing a relationship with her friend, she decided to be upfront about it. Subtly had never been the mare’s strongest feature and she chose to go big or go home. When asked if she would like to start dating, Songbird Serenade gave a casual “yeah, I’m down” and the two have been sweet on each other ever since. The occasional long-distance part of their relationship can be tough if one of the other is on tour, but they always make up for lost time with comfort food, presents, and spoiling all the pets.

Similarly to how she spoils her mother, Sapphire Shores is constantly giving Songbird all the affection and gifts she could ever want. Songbird tells her that she doesn’t need presents to be happy, but she can’t say she doesn’t enjoy the attention. At this point, Songbird has a small army of the cuddliest stuffed animals, a horde of soft sweaters, and enough high-quality pillows and blankets to make enough forts to house an entire neighborhood.
