A crash lesson for distinguishing Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Japanese.  
When you see a lot of repetetive characters with extremely simple structure (you can tell this by comparing them to the kanji, Japanese Character, usually no more than 4 strokes) or strokes that curve through more than 180°, it is highly possible to be Japanese.  
Then, when you are quite sure that what you are reading is Chinese, look for simplified structures; if you see any character with 又 on its left, right or top, or if you see anything like 讠, 钅 or 饣, it is simplified.

Gotta say, the newspaper really hit home the HK feel.  
Trivia: HK people call strawberry by a 4-character word that sounds very similar to “strawberry”, but a person unfamiliar with the name would probably mistake it as some kind of pear, because the last character is “pear”. Luckily AJ here won’t have to deal with that kind of thing.

The characters are far too complex to likely be Japanese
 
usually, really complex characters = Chinese, less complex characters = Japanese  
Also, the 2nd, 3rd and fourth character above AJ said “sweet fruit bar” according to image to text translate with Google and it detected Chinese

My mistake. My brain automatically links every picture with asian letters to Japan. Most be the years of Anime the internet bombarded me with.

It’s actually in Hong Kong lol.

The language in this picture is Chinese but I guess she could be in Japan.. the Deviantart link simply says Asia
