Yeah. I figured it’s already been dumped into mp4, so trying to convert back to gif would only make things worse. At least ffmpeg does a good job of vp9 conversion.

oh, well that sucks then. videos are better if you convert the original high color animation frames directly into video, not if you convert the animation to a gif then the gif to a video.
 
you do get a smaller size converting gif to video, just not any better quality.

It was coming from Twitter, which presents gifs as mp4s. I grabbed the mp4 and converted it to webm (as per site requirements) and uploaded it. Note the size of it for the quality.
