Being dead, perhaps? What about desiccants and rot? The Celephais Mage Quarterly suggests a preservative pool and weekly bathing for upkeep, but there are a lot of different zombie types.
I don’t think that’s a good idea. I know zombies, and this kind of thing never ends well.

That’s nice. At least they have direction and purpose. I once had a conversation with a mildly intelligent zombie, and he said that the worst thing about undeath was boredom.
How’s their corpus holding up? Make sure you keep scavengers off of them. Especially vultures. Once they get a taste for undead flesh, it’s all they’ll ever eat.
