FiM was not a show that tried to have strict world building. Whatever happened was for the sake of the current plot and that’s fine.
 
Also I find this place a fun place to mention Trixie’s character has never really been appealing.

Ah, I thought that was just put to establish Trixie’s powers in that season and that the words were talking how Trixie’s magic is holding up in general, compared to every other unicorn. So I thought saying Trixie could be the 2nd most powerful unicorn after Twilight was too much of a stretch due to other unicorns we have seen. I just misinterpreted it then.

It’s just that when you put ‘2nd most powerful unicorn’ it came across as you saying she was the 2nd most powerful unicorn in like, all of Equestria or Ponyville second to Twilight, not so much as the 2nd most powerful unicorn we’ve seen at that specific point in the series.

I put her as 2:nr most powerful since iirc, only other unicorn that used magic is Rarity and that was only levitation and gemstone röntgen-ing

That was because Starlight was teaching her, which wasn’t the point of the chart. The point was to show her blatent drop in powerlevel since her introduction. Her getting better with teaching doesn’t change the fact that she devolved to the point of needing teaching in the first place. And complaining about complaining is still complaining.

Isn’t saying that she was ‘the second most powerful unicorn’ a bit of a stretch? But yeah, this chart is totally right. I still love Trixie, but her powers have been pretty inconsistent.

 
Atleast Trixie had the alicorn amulet during her confrontation with unicorn Twilight. Starlight Glimmer had nothing and bested alicorn Twilight many years later.

The new writers are really bad at writing the background characters.

Sure, but I think they didn’t have yet a real idea about that character, and after the season 3 they realize that a trickster with no real power is more fuctional and funny (imho they are right). In a retcon we could figure that all the magic in season 1 was still more magic trick + unicorn basic telekinesis.

I think OP has a point. That stuff she was shown doing in Season 1 is still more advanced than the stuff we see in Season 6 onwards.

Trixie never was so powerful in magic, but it’s the character. She is an illusionist, a magician, not an arcanist like Twilight, it’s pretty coerent because she has other skills.
 
Yes, of course she could perfor simple magic (in a D&D contest we could call them cantrips), but sure never was a “wizard” like Twilight or other unicorns (Sunset, Sunburst, Starlight, etc…)
