Yeah, it was basically sung by Button, so I don’t see what the issue, or hate over it is.

I mean, the song does hold quite the significance in the fandom. Yes, it’s minecraft themed and technically a parody of a non-pony song, but it helped form everyone’s fanon opinions on Button Mash as a character. He was a blank slate before jan animation got a hold of him, and in two videos he became an icon.

What should and shouldn’t have been included is something that people can argue over, but the original songwriter got to make these decisions, and he chose a lot of well received, very popular songs in the community. there’s a point where adding the things you personally would like to see would’ve been too much effort to be worth it, and everything just needs to be wrapped up. We got a lot of good songs in the tribute, and as much as some of us would like other songs to have been added or some to have been removed, we should be happy with the product we got.

Okay but this is wrong? It had nothing to do with ponies at all until someone used it for a pony video without changing the lyrics or anything. It’s a minecraft song, that was used on a pony animation.  
Octavia is a ponified version of another song with changed lyrics… Although admittedly I don’t know how many lyrics were changed. I assumed it was more than just “Octavia” so I was okay with it. But if it’s not changed that much, well then that one does feel like it should be part of it either.
 
It’s a big deal when you consider that other songs didn’t get included, that could have been if there was room for them. And this fandom makes such damn good music!

Honestly, I don’t have that big of a problem with it. At most, it’s maybe a little jarring just because it is a parody of a very popular and well known song. The song by itself is fine. Not one I return to a lot, but still harmless by itself.

Yeah, it’s a great song, (and EllieMonty is a damn good singer, probably the best in the brony/pegasister fanbase) but it doesn’t really make any mention of the MLP series either, (other then the name “Octavia,” but that could be any person) so it’s kinda unfair that people only call out “Don’t Mine at Night” for “barely being pony related,” when the same could be said for many other brony/MLP fan-made songs too.
 
The song was still made with Button & Sweetie in mind, (and even if you all hate that pairing, the music video animation actually poked fun at it, with Sweetie being oblivious to Button’s existence, basically not giving a crap about him) and it’s kinda a reference to how much voice actress Clair “Sweetie Belle” Corlett loves Minecraft. So it was still made with Pony in mind originally, at least.

“I Am Octavia” isn’t 100% original.

I think the song by itself is fine. But placing it between a bunch of other songs that are purely pony-related and original compositions definitely dilutes its effect.

fair enough. to be fair, these gripes you have are rather justified, and most of the appeal of this music, at least to me, and i believe with other people, is there is a sort of charm to these parodies, which is a hard thing to explain.
 
in any case, you certainly know a thing or two about music production and criticism. perhaps we could talk music some time.

I like Minecraft, it’s a pretty good game and I play it occasionally, but most of the parodies have many of the things I dislike in music, namely weak lyricism being sung by a rather irritating vocalist, on top of a fairly crap instrumental with a mix that’s generally overproduced to the point of feeling “fake” and on top of all that just not being very nice to listen to.
 
Don’t Mine at Night is kind of all of these issues? ‘course you may totally disagree with me, and that’s cool. Musical taste is a totally subjective thing.

“Don’t Mine at Night” being the last song was AnimatedJames’ choice, and it was really only a quick phrase to cap off the medley. Barely quotes it at all compared to the length of the other segments of the medley.

Uh no? I’d say it’s not a brony song because it’s not a brony song. Had that song on my MP3 player through my college years along with the rest of Renard’s tunes before pony was about.

Thought this was bait, but it’s because it’s not a pony song isn’t it? I guess it’d be just as bad as a FNAF song appearing just because someone had a version of Luna singing it once. Definitely does not deserve to be in a brony song compilation.
