uploader description aside, this picture has a point. the writers seem to be struggling with the concept that the basis of rarity’s character is supposed to her generosity

Did Rarity even know Spike was gonna eat them? Sure, it’s expected from him, but Rarity may have thought he was actually trying to make a profit.

The value of a gem is determined by its rarity.

I think it has to do with her seeing right through spike’s false altruism. You should not indulge a person who’s known to be weak to greedy impulses. It fits in with her doting and critical personality especially as a psudo-mom to Sweetie Bell - at the same time Fluttershy being an overly nurturing “mom” goes right ahead and gives spike a HUGE ass gem.

Also, look at the saddle. The ruby is the focal point to the dress, it’s where your eye instinctively goes to. It’s meant to be the centerpiece of the outfit.

Ok, I think its been mentioned lots of times but Rarity’s gem was the gem that the CMCs used to buy a big ass dog drying machine. It may have been small in size but whatever it was made, it was worth more than the bigger gems Spike had.
 
Plus it had to be that specific shape and size because it was picked off from one of Rarity’s creations.

Its not about the currency , its the practicality .  
Spike wasn’t thinking “Oh i’m about to invest these gems and make millions.”  
no he was thinking “at the end of the day i’m putting these shiny bastards in my face you can be apart of this i’m just telling you whats going to happen.”

While this episode in general will drive the fans of over-analysis up the wall, I agree with the small but high-value gem theory. A tiny, but pristine ruby crystal is worth a lot more than a misshapen and opaque rock that is only nominally a ruby.

Considering that one gem was used to purchase that GIANT HAIRDRYER, I’m guessing that the value and cut of the gem was probably much higher than the size would lead you to believe. For all we know, that’s a VERY rare stone! Also, she knows full well that Spike plans on eating it, so she might have been taking that into consideration as well.

At the risk of using anecdotal experience but it has always been my experience that people who go out of their way to hate tend to be pathetic.
 
Also if your gf “hates Rarity” for things like this, why is it Rarity’s fault and not the writers’?  
After all, if the writers are portraying her outside of what she is supposed to be canonically then that is their fault right?
 
I could also point out that Rarity is one of the few characters who does show her element in any significant sense but no need.

People who hate fictional characters that passionately scare me personally.

Instead of “hurr Rarity’s not following her element,” how about “Spike is a greedy food-addict and should pet sit pro bono as a good friend.”

She chose the most unique gem on her saddle, which is also wasn’t that much smaller than the other gems there. Not to mention the value of said gem was enough to pay for that “hair dryer”
