Well, it can’t fit into the Mars Attack continuity nor the Transformers G1 cartoon continuity because this crossover is a different canon.
The crossover between Mars Attacks and Transformers was set during the second season of G1 cartoon of Transformers.
IDW tried this before but Hasbro refused it then. They allowed it now.

War For Cybertron: Siege is the name of current G1 based toyline which the current (New) IDW series use for most of the characters designs.

No, I think they’re mainly going use G1-style art.
