WHO released statements regarding the virus outbreak in a series of scientific articles compiled by their lead scientists on the issue. This is the highest-level source available. News medias are taking pinches of it and misunderstanding it or blatantly twisting it to create interest so people keep drinking their provisions of news.
 
First of all, the 3.4% lethality rate is only among confirmed and (to an extent) clinically diagnosed cases. People are taking this and unrealistically spreading it. But the truth is, there’s several statements that point out an overwhelming vast majority of cases are so insignificantly mild that they’re not reported. Like, you have it, but don’t go to the doctor because your symptoms are so mild you don’t notice. So you also usually don’t bother testing.
 
The mass testing in South Korea indicates the numbers are closer to 0.6%, because people with very mild cases are being tested. This is the real reason WHO and the CDC stress for more testing so that there’s more accurate representation.
 
 
81% of cases that are reported thus far have mild cases (no or mild pneumonia develops). And of those which are reported, 5% become critical.
 
Severity of symptoms indicates that if a person dies, they would have also died having any other coronavirus/respiratory virus, such as the flu. Some deaths of elderly patients (such as the first one near me in North Texas) was assumed to be caused by the flu until COVID-19 was found postmortem. This is why doctors are assuming it’s COVID-19 after a test for the flu fails (because they are I think the same family, both respiratory viruses, and symptoms can be pretty similar; the scientific articles frequently mentions influenza and COVID-19 as if they’re cousins).

This virus is only deadly to the old and sick who have existing issues that make them weak enough the flu would kill them.

Maybe because of all the conflicting News About it and no one, not even the WHO knows how to deal with it. There is no vaccine, People don´t have partial immunity like with the flu. And it spreads quickly
