Hypocrisy much?
“What about the sentiment “you’re perfect the way you are”? That’s a wonderful sentiment, more wonderful than dreams of being a prince/princess (or a president since it’s rather common for Americans not to care about royalty). Any child who feels that their differences make them worse, somehow inferior to others, would appreciate this.”
That sentiment is a false one. It’s total bullshit. There’s always room to improve upon yourself. No one is ever perfect, and anyone who tries to convince a child they are is only setting them up for disappointment when they hit the real world. Because the real world isn’t going to see them as perfect, and they’ll think it’s the worlds problem and not theirs to correct. You should never feel that you aren’t good enough for the world, but you should always feel that you can make yourself better for it.
The people who recognize they aren’t perfect and strive to improve themselves and the world around them are close to perfection than anyone who believe themselves to be. And Twi worked for this, so if anything, this is showing that with hard work, dedication, and plenty of studying, anyone of the little girls watching could some day be a princess. Rather than spending day and night studying only to stay exactly where they are.
And this is all assuming being an Alicorn makes her perfect. When we can probably assume she won’t be nearly as powerful as Celly, who was defeated with relative ease by a Changeling Queen(Who, come to think of it, could also be counted as an Alicorn, I suppose). She was also trapped by Nightmare moon after her return, she couldn’t defeat Discord on her own. Even the god damn Alicorn who balanced to massive celestial bodies for 1000 years non-stop was defeated. Cadance was also show struggling to keep a barrier up for an entire episode, and she was locked away by Chrysalis in the first place. I think Twi will have her limits and make her mistakes even with wings.
Assumptions that she will suddenly be perfect are exactly the kind of assumptions that shouldn’t be made because we won’t know until the episode’s aired.
Exactly.
She already was. Her cutie mark allows her to cast practically every spell, including ones that shouldn’t be possible (“reforming spells”, for example).
He never said she’d be flawless. He said she’d be unambiguously superior
that was one of the most thought objections, however I should point out, if you read the descrption for the plot line this ISN’T instantly going to make Twilight perfect and Flawless. She will have challenges as a Princess, she will likely make mistakes and she will still need the support of her friends.
Also in Equestria being a Princess comes with obligations, its not a simple easy ride.
To everyone in general, remember this change will come with new story ideas, new oppurtunies and new challenge.
This is why many of us are saying wait till you see the episode before complaining, because the writers might be skilled enough to pull this out without messing up Twilight’s characters. If you read their idea you’ll see this will NOT kill all conflict in the show.
And I should point out this isn’t as left field as it seems, Celestia hand picked Twilight and has been training her her entire life. And shes NAMED for the period between day and night, something I feel is no accident. This is not necessarily a massive uturn on her character and does not mean the show is doomed to be ruined forever.
There are several objections I have to it, none of them being the presence of a toy. The destiny-swap would be good enough to make the toy, and they have that all set up. It’s the stuff after, since it’s looking in all likelihood that this is NOT temporary, that’s all wrong.
It’s not that I expect Twilight or her situation to change drastically, but that’s just it: this is a DRASTIC change to the character that everypony would notice just by LOOKING at her. It makes no sense that ponies would treat her the same, and if it really is ascendance, then any humility she shows is intrinsically false humility.
If somepony accuses her of thinking she’s better than them, ala Trixie, and she says that isn’t true, her wings will cause her words to ring hollow. Because, in this universe, they prove that she IS better than them. Which, simply, sucks.
What about the sentiment “you’re perfect the way you are”? That’s a wonderful sentiment, more wonderful than dreams of being a prince/princess (or a president since it’s rather common for Americans not to care about royalty). Any child who feels that their differences make them worse, somehow inferior to others, would appreciate this.
Every innocent child with a loving parent wants to think their parent is the best in the world.
But if we add this? An objective mark of how good or special somepony is? Those wonderful dreams and cherished words ring hollow. You are NOT perfect the way you are. Your parent is NOT a good enough pony. The lack of a wing and horn set tells you so.
This… I can’t agree with. I’m sorry. Such a thing goes strongly against my moral code.
Derpy from the show would share that sentiment, “you’re perfect the way you are”… but by all appearances she’s being phased out as well. I could understand this simple act of corporate cowardice, it happens. Derpy, fan favorite or not, was a background pony with 1 canon speaking role.
But with Twilight, I’m sorry, every time I look at her should this (in all likelihood) come to pass, I’ll just see the words “you aren’t good enough.”
I’ll confess, I am autistic. I have an IQ three standard deviations above the norm, but I’ve been challenged in some ways. There are things that, despite my intellect, I cannot do. While she was only my fourth-favorite pony, I identified with Twilight. A smart pony who valued friends, but had a lot to learn. Who was brilliant, but still messed things up once in a while, who had limits. That there were things her friends could do, and that she couldn’t. With good intentions, but not an alien, untouchable, shining beacon of morality either.
Now, with her newfound pegasis and earth pony parts, I’m afraid that there are few things that I could call “limits” anymore.
If executive meddling is to blame, that’s a shame, but that’s a cause to the effect, not a reason to watch something despite glaring flaws. If an arsonist burns down a convenience store, I’m still not going to buy a pile of ash and claim it’s a wonderful bag of potato chips.
I’ll still watch the episode, and will continue to write (S2-based) fanfiction. But this show, if this is permanent, will have gone from “Amazing” to “good”, at best. It’s a shark-jump in my opinion, but the question I have is how much it was cleared by.
I don’t expect everyone to have my opinion. I don’t expect people would be unable to claim otherwise. I don’t mean to sound pretentious, and I’m sure there can be many eloquently-phrased rebuttals against my perspective, but that’s just where I stand.
And half the comments on every last one of them is just like yours. I’m not seeing your point.
Well, she wasn’t shown having the same kind of training, no. But for all we know she could have a long history with Celestia.
She probably had some kind of day job, but she didn’t seem to be involved in any kind of government work and wasn’t involved in protecting Canterlot. She also wasn’t receiving the kind of magical training that Twilight was.
She seemed to be an ornamental princess rather than a head of state like Celestia. I’m not sure what the deal with Twilight is going to be, but it sounds different from whatever Cadance was doing.
She wasn’t lounging around. She just wasn’t mentioned in the show. Then she married the head of Celestia’s royal guard and brother of her personal student. I’m thinking maybe there are Celly and Luna, who are special cases, and then they can instil some of their power into a pony they trust to use it wisely.
And all the stuff with Cadance was happening off screen. A bit like how all the movies leading up to The Avengers were happening in the same universe despite never actually being mentioned until the main event. Like Cadance has a background, it was just never explained in canon.
I’m hoping for an explanation, but given that Cadance was just lounging around until she was handed the Crystal Empire, any explanation is going to be at least a little bit of a retcon.
Becoming a princess, under any interpretation, is also not one of her goals. She wants to study magic under Princess Celestia, which is what she’s already doing.
They have mentioned that there is something of a mythos to being a princess that they’re going to explain, if I recall.
I’m not disagreeing with you, mind, but it just brought to mind a possibility. Maybe a princess in FiM means something different?
She’s been training as the personal student of an Alicorn powerful enough to balance the sun and moon for 1000 years straight.
It hasn’t necessarily been building toward this, but it’s been building toward her being something special, and this was never necessarily off the table.
