Starlights power never made sense nor was an exlanation offered, But Trixie’s improvement, considering the context and her circumstances? That makes sense.

I don’t think Starlight’s lazy badly explained power level explains or excuses anything, but you do you dude.
It’s not like magic or power levels have ever been consistent in this show anyway.
Than again Trixie was being trained by the unicorn who effortlessly punked The element of magic who had recently become a demi-god and had been trained at an elite magic school while receiving tutoring by an even older demi-god.
