Honestly, those medical masks are only useful if someone who’s already infected is wearing it to reduce their ability to spread the virus. If you’re wearing one thinking it’ll protect you, then you’re either woefully misinformed or woefully uninformed.
 
To protect the wearer, it needs to be a respirator (like construction workers wear to stop sawdust from getting into their lungs), and there needs to be a skin-tight seal from the respirator to your face. If there’s any breach (including facial hair), then you may as well not be wearing one at all.
