In my own headcanons, the flowy ethereal mane is just a symptom of harboring excessive amounts of magic in the body and alicorn “immortality” is actually them occasionally casting an age spell on themselves so that they never grow old.
Have we ever seen Cadance with the flowy ethereal mane?
She might be as mortal as him. ^^
