MapleStory is an old 2D MMORPG with fantastic hand-painted visuals and staggeringly well-composed music. The gameplay wasn’t very good, but everything else was. The game won’t even launch nowadays due to a D/C hacker infestation and way too much “design by landfill,” but those of us who played have fond memories.
 
It had a very chibi art style where the characters’ heads were almost bigger than the rest of their bodies, especially the in-game sprites. They were also very expressive, and had a selection of facial expressions assigned to the F keys that you could use to add some context when chatting with other players. The whole “full control over your avatar’s facial expression” is something I really miss in online games, and, ironically enough, Pony Town is the only game I’ve seen in years that allows for that. Good times.
