Basically this. They were friends and then became more later on, though if you were paying any kind of attention and weren’t like 100% against them being together it was obvious in episode 100 what was going on. It happens in hetero relationships all the time; especially in fiction, no reason it can’t happen here too.

I disagree. Calling them friendsfirst and excluding the possibility of them being in a relationship soured the reveal once it was out. You don’t say no and then show the opposite. Then there’s the can o worms about pleasing the fandom which already is a bad idea if you’re a writer. You write a story, not for fans.
Tumblr and to a slightly lesser extent Twitter hates everything that isn’t to their exact specifications. Some people are borderline unpleasable, Lyrabon was done perfectly fine in the show.
