Everything in Pony Life is exaggerated and elevated to the extreme.
 
As everypony else got crazier all around her, Applejack’s role as the eternal straight man has been escalated to the point where she now has no other option but to turn to the audience to seek validation that all the insanity around her is, in fact, actually happening.

Well Fluttershy can now grow and shrink at will for no reason either and I kind of like it. There was also that one time Sunset Shimmer breaks the fourth wall in one of the EQG shorts so this is not new.

It kind of makes sense though. AJ always keeps it real and it’s fitting that she would be the one to recognize how silly the cartoon she’s in is.
