@Twiface
Ships come and go in popularity, some have staying power and others possibilities are ignored entirely. There is alot more Trixie x Starlight fics now than there is Twixie for example. In part, it comes down to what people want to write, which inspires what people want to draw, which inspires what people want to write, etc,etc.
Many people ship Starlight with Sunburst now thanks to them walking next to eachother in the finale, but that doesn’t make much sense to me either considering how bad and/or awkward their interactions with eachother often end up. It’s just what the majority like and what the writers and artists feed to keep those ships going. And they fed quite alot with Lyra and Bon Bon.
Who?
There are only 21 images with the ‘Lyraderp’ tag, most of them predating ‘Slice of Life.’ I don’t consider that “taking off.”
There is only one image with the ‘Lyrashine’ tag.
Nobody is shipping Lyra with Amethyst, Orange Swirl, or Cloud Kicker.
Some people do ship all of those. But why Lyrabon more often is simple: she didn’t sit next to them a whole bunch! The animators mentioned putting them together a lot because their color schemes looked good together. Maybe they didn’t get married ’til near the end, but the two being next to each other a bit too often to be coincidence goes waaay back.
Honestly, as someone who only started started to like Lyrabon after Slice of Life, where they finally got an interesting dynamic, I don’t know either. Even if Lyrabon is canon, all these other ships should be allowed too, given that they also have a similar basis.
@TexasUberAlles
Technically that was The because the fandom was shipping them so much in the first place. I don’t think there was any actual ship teasting until slice of life
Simple answer is the fandom are like lemmings. People who hopped on past season 1 saw them paired and just assumed it was some kind of law. Likewise with Scratchtavia (they were never even in the same town until season 4!). The original pic that started the pairing was a collection of 5 or 6 screencaps of Lyra and Bonbon standing together. That was it. Half of the people didn’t even ship them. The staff started intentionally putting them together in season 2 and, like lemmings, it got pushed harder as a ship in the fandom. Sad because they got used less and less and became way less fun, Bonbon stopped speaking entirely.
@Background Pony #7CC9
This is also true and drives me insane. They only sat together once and I bet no one even knows which episode and season it was!
@Twiface
It’s been explained by the show staff that the reason they were initially placed together early on was for the sake of color balance within crowd shots, and for no other reason. But, I suppose their colors and designs were so vibrant and complemented each other so incredibly well that they couldn’t help but stick out to fans as being “significant”. The rest, of course, is history.
@LanceOmikron
I guess that would explain it, then. It took me a while to find most of these pairings, but Lyrabon stood out instantly. It was also present in the first episode.
@Twiface
I’ve watched the show since season 1, and Lyra and Bon Bon were always really noticeable together in crowds. Fan theories on their relationship progressed over time from friends to roommates to lovers, but they stood out from the crowd as early as episode 1.
just because a ship exist doesn’t mean its th emost popular. I mean I imagine that those bachelor/ette shows have people who the viewers think work best with the one who picks the rose recipients. Sort of like that?
Basically while any ship can be created not all of them get the same traction behind them with the fandoms.
@Phaoray
It was probably the storyboard artists’ choice first since it was only them in the background. The writers didn’t get on board (officially) until ‘Slice of Life’ in Season 4.
@Background Pony #9061
The ship teasing was really annoying for me because it was obvious fanservice.
Canonizing the ship also made me grow to dislike it because it killed any potential for other ships. Remember how many different ships there were for Big Mac back in the day? Now all of those are dead because he’s in a canon relationship.
I also hate how militant ship defenders will attack anyone who doesn’t draw Lyra and Bon Bon together. Even before it was canon, people would still act like it was just because it was fanon. Canonizing the ship just gave them more ammo.
Because that’s the pairing the writers chose. As episodes progressed, you saw them together more and more as opposed to being with others. They argued at Cranky’s wedding, and in the Tantabus episode, they literally dreamed of being joined together and were happy with it.
No clue. It’s weird that Lyrabon became practically the sole ship for these two back when the fandom loved to concoct backstories for all the background ponies.
@Background Pony #27DE
I feel that too. Something about it getting canonized took the fun out of the ship for me. Cheesepie too, for that matter. I can’t really say why either. I liked it when the show tipped their hat to the ship in Slice of Life and Rainbow Rocks, but for some reason a lot of the later ship teasing started to get annoying. Maybe it felt less genuine Somehow?
@Fakskis
Nah, they’re talking about Tootsie Flute. She’s a background foal who’s been around since the beginning. She kind of looks like she could pass for the two’s child like how Dinky looks like she could be Derpy’s daughter. Hell, before Show Stoppers aired, some fans had Sweetie Belle as their kid as well because she has a similar kind of curly, two-toned mane as Bon Bon.

I looked it up. Apparently it was a minor detail in ‘Dragonshy’ way back in Season 1.

Everypony be like,
But seriously, Lyra is bi. Didn’t work out with Blues, but still.

@ReikAck
I’ve always liked that ship. But I think Bon Bon needs someone too.
@LanceOmikron
Your personal title checks out.

It’s an old fanon from back in season 1.
Edited
She’s Amethyst’s daughter, though
It’s just the pairing the writer’s chose.

Yes. I was surprised when I found the original picture.
