People often forget that most versions of Grimlock are far from unintelligent, because of the speech impediment.
 
It is also nice to see him as the leader he is, so motivation is rather fitting trait for him.  
Sure his usual kind of motivation is somewhere between, leading by example, intimidation and pointing in the general direction of something that needs to be obliterated, but still..

||Whew. That’s good to hear. For a minute there, I thought this was going suck. Sounds a little too close to Power Ponies for me to actually buy this but Spike actually doing something useful was honestly better than I hoped for out of this issue. ||

Stop me it I’m wrong but this plot looks very much like enemy attacks base, spike and grimlock must defend the base. Spike wants to be useful but grimlock singlehandedly manages to handle everything. Spike feels crappy about himself and thinks he’s useless. Queue one motivational speech from grimlock on why spike shouldn’t feel so bad (blah blah you’re greater than you think you are blah blah great potential) spike feels better. Story ends. I feel like this is just the same godawful ‘spike has no self confidence’ plots we saw from his Seasons 3-5 episodes but with robots. I swear, from this page alone, I bet you could easily substitute grimlock’s speech with Twilight’s from Equestria games or Cadence from Princess Spike.
 
Of course, I’m just speculating at this point.
