Considering how Discord was so resentful of the thought of losing his only friend in “Keep Calm and Flutter On”, it could lend credence to the idea of him being Starswirl. He realized that he is the way he is now because he never believed in the magic of friendship, and couldn’t control the power he attempted to create without it.

Kinda strange how in my fic, Starswirl dies with an incomplete spell that is related to the Elements of Harmony.
 
Only in that story, Clover the Clever finishes it on her mentor’s behalf. No, Clover doesn’t become a pretty princess.

Since he apparently wanted to make a spell for turning ponies into alicorns (what for?) but couldn’t finish it because he did not get friendship (jerk?) it’d be make sense for him to return as a villain.
 
MY headcanon is that he went on to become pony Rassilon but that’ll never happen on the show :p Maybe in fanfics.
 
Eh, in reality they just needed a plot device to give TS a princess making spell, and Starswirl was the all purpose go-to plot element.

But the spell backfired on him. Because he had no real friends to mish-mash, he became mish-mashed himself. His new form corrupted him and he started to become obsessed with chaos. He even took on a new name to reflect this new mindset:
 
Discord.
 
(btw, I’m not a believer in the “Starswirl-is-Discord” theory, but it certainly adds fuel to the fire, don’t you think?)

Starswirl was introduced as an obscure historical figure, yet has been referenced constantly ever since.

I’m starting to think that this was all a carefully layed-out test for Twilight. They  
gave her a difficult scenario, which they might have made even worse on purpose (I honestly doubt that dashie was the only pegasus around who could do the weather job, for example), to make Twilight’s task even harder.
 
Even further, they possibly wanted to make her an alicorn for some reason, then to give it an excuse they cooked up a test that they were sure that Twilight can solve (which is hard enough to deserve the reward).
 
They tamed Discord first, then gave Twilight more power. Something might be coming, something big that will need a huge amount of power to surpass. Could it be a foe mightier than all the villains so far combined? Or some other apocalyptic scenario? We’ll see it in Season 4, so let’s stay tuned!

I have a feeling Starswirl was even more obsessed with studying magic than Twilight is.  
And Twilight was heading in the same direction, until Princess Celestia kicked her out of Canterlot.

Dammit, they didn’t answer a single question.

I feel like Celestia and Luna are the only “real” Alicorns, a Starswirl was looking for a way to replicate them. Now that I’m typing this, I seem to recall that being a plot point of a fan fiction…
 
Either way, Twilight, Cadence and how many others are probably only psuedo-Alicorns, perhaps lacking Earth Pony magic, or possessing the magic of one pony divided by three. Wether they’re immortal or not is still up in the air.
