It’s not much of a story, actually:

I suffered a lot from double-vision as a child - my eye muscles were too weak as a kid and so my eyes would just randomly keep crossing and uncrossing; I had to spend a couple of years wearing glasses and an eye-patch (first on one eye, then the other) to force my eyes to straighten and focus ahead rather than right in front of my nose. xD On the downside, I spent those two years looking like a cross between a pirate and Brains from Thunderbirds, but on the upside it did at least work. (My depth perception still sucks though, and “3D” effects only ever give me a headache).

Yay! She has turned out to be one of my favorite characters in the show!
 
I found out years later that I also had strabismus, and that explained a LOT about my clumsiness! I had it from a fairly young age. It felt good to finally accept. And the fix is pretty easy for me; I just need to wear prism lenses in my glasses!

To those who remember reciting the Pledge of Allegiance…
 
I pledge allegiance,  
to Derpy Hooves,  
her wall-eyed stare most comical.  
And to the fandom,  
that did embrace,  
her blonde hair,  
bubble mark,  
grey coat,  
with muffins, love, and letters for all!

In time, she would become a princess by her own hoof. But that is a story for another day.
