A little story about how Colby Jack ends up adopting his nephew, Cheddar.
Monty is excited to have a… brother? Cousin? Brousin??

It was a warm, sunny day and Colby Jack was spending it with his son Monty. The pair were under the cool shade of an old tree, playing a game. Monty put his small hooves on the much larger stallion and pushed him with great effort. After a couple moments, Colby rolled over onto his side dramatically and wailed, “Arghhh! You have bested me, brave hero! I am no match for your strength!” He went limp with a theatrical groan and closed his eyes, unable to hide a faint smile on his face.
Monty laughed valiantly and clambered atop the beast, standing proudly. “That’s right, foul creature! I beat you and that means no bedtime tonight!” He said with a grin.
Colby smirked at this and rolled again, causing Monty to topple down onto the grass, giggling. “Now, hold on a minute, that wasn’t in the rules,” Colby said, scooping Monty into his arms and tickling him. Monty shrieked with glee, kicking his hind legs in the air.
“I won, I make the rules!” The colt exclaimed between giggles.
Colby Jack’s bellowing laughter filled the air, but stopped abruptly as his ears twitched. He looked down the long dirt path that lead out to the main road, and spotted a figure walking closer. He squinted. As soon as he recognized the figure, he got to his feet and spoke lowly, “Monty, go inside.”
Monty got to his hooves as well and looked at the figure curiously. As much as he wanted to ask why, he knew enough that it was probably for the best to listen to his dad in this case. He quickly and clumsily made his way to the house and ran inside. He couldn’t help himself though, and found a window to peek through.
The figure, a cream colored Stallion with orange splotches, approached Colby Jack with a warm, albeit false smile. Colby’s ears pressed back and he sneered. “You’ve got a lot of nerve showing up here,” he said through gritted teeth. The other stallion laughed sharply.
“Now, is that any way to greet your big brother?” The stallion asked, looking at Colby calmly.
Colby scoffed loudly, leaning back a bit. “You’re no brother of mine, Ric. Not after everything you’ve done.”
“You can’t deny genetics, Jackie!” Ric replied, still smiling. “Now, before you lose your temper, I’ve got a favor to ask of you.”
Colby couldn’t believe this. His brother- no, this guy that he hasn’t seen in several years suddenly decides to show up with no warning to ask something of him? He must be stupid. Colby couldn’t help but laugh, though angry. “You think I’d do anything for you? That’s really funny.” His laughter died out and he glared seriously, “Get out of here.”
“Hear me out,” Ric started, “So, my girl left me-”
“Unsurprising.” Colby interrupted.
Ric snorted, before continuing, leaning a little closer to Colby and speaking with a hushed tone. “-and she left me with a little problem.” Ric’s eyes darted to the side quickly.
For the first time, Colby noticed that there had been a young colt standing behind Ric the whole time. He was small, and had a long, ragged mane, filled with mats and knots.
“Oh, for the love of-” Colby sighed, before continuing to glare at Ric, though now also speaking quietly. “You are the last person on Terra Magus who should have children.” He said, sincerely angry.
“I couldn’t agree more, Jackie.” Ric said, his charming facade of a smile fading. “But there’s no use denying that this brat is mine, he looks just like me, ‘sides his goofy teeth of course.” He spoke quietly, trying to make sure the colt behind him didn’t hear.
Colby seethed, he could have punched Ric in the face if there weren’t children watching. He closed his eyes and breathed slowly, trying to keep his temper. “…So, what do you want from me?”
“Glad you asked! I was wondering if you could find it in your heart to let the little guy stay here for awhile.”
“…Awhile, huh?” Colby snorted.
“For the foreseeable future.” Ric corrected himself. “Shouldn’t be a problem, right? I know the house is big enough, it fit you, me and the rest of our siblings didn’t it? And I couldn’t help but notice you have a brat of your own already.” He gestured towards the house, before locking eyes with Monty who was still peeking through the window. He raised a hoof and waved at him.
Colby aggressively moved in the way, shoving Ric’s hoof back to the ground. “Don’t you dare look at my son.” He growled, before again sighing and composing himself. He looked at the ground, looked at the colt, and looked at Ric, deep in thought. “…You didn’t try asking anyone else?” He asked.
“They either wouldn’t talk to me or are too busy for a brat, you know how it is.” Ric shrugged, looking bored.
Colby heaved one last heavy sigh, before looking at him. “Alright, he can stay here.” He said.
Ric grinned and pulled his mane back with one hoof in relief. “Thank goodness, the kid was really cramping my style-”
Colby got in his face, “BUT, I want you to know very clearly that I am not doing it for you. I’m doing it for him.” He said, gesturing towards the colt. “…And there’s one condition.”
“And what is that?” Ric asked suspiciously.
“I want it on paper. I want you to officially give me custody over him.” Colby said.
Ric’s eyes narrowed. “…Why?” he asked.
Colby snorted. “So, if for any reason you decide you want to barge back in here and take him back, you’ll have to work for it. A concept I’m sure you’re unfamiliar with.” He scowled at his older brother distastefully. “Shouldn’t be a problem, right? You want to leave him here after all.”
Ric stared at him for a long time, frowning for reasons he himself couldn’t understand. “…Fine.” He agreed, reluctantly.
Before the two began to talk specifics, Colby gestured and shouted to Monty who was still looking meekly out the window. “Come on out here, meet your cousin!”
Colby Jack then took Ric aside, away from the kids to speak further.
Monty, now given permission to come out, excitedly scrambled out the door and towards his cousin. As he got closer, he noticed that the other colt looked rather tired and miserable, so he decided to take a slower approach. He walked over slowly and gave a polite smile. “Hi, I’m Monty! What’s your name?” He greeted.
The other colt, who looked slightly older than he did, looked at him. “…I’m Cheddar.” He said, softly and shyly.
“Nice to meet you, Cheddar!” Monty smiled, more brightly now. “Do you wanna play?”
Cheddar could not help but find Monty’s smile contagious. He began to smile a little as well. “…Sure.” He agreed.
And so the two went off to play.
Monty and Cheddar’s friendship is slow at first with Cheddar having to cope and adapt with such a sudden change, but as he gets more comfortable, the pair become thick as thieves. They consider each other brothers and are best friends.
