ahh finally the second (re)redesign of the Mane 6 crew! Abel was super fun to draw and this was my first time giving a character a muzzle like this (he be lookin super manly)

AJ wasnt my favorite of the mane 6 but Im a sucker for country characters that are family oriented (actually any family oriented character fills me with immense joy lol) also besides an oc of mine AJ was the first character I’ve worked with who was trans. I hated my past description that merely said “lol he struggles with disphoria” ??? Bruh elaborate plz
 
so ladies, gentleman, genderfluid, nonbinary and other reading this, let us dive in!
 
Abel grew up as what most precieved to be a “tomboy”, engaging more with school colts and didnt catch interest in ‘girl stuff’. Though despite never feeling comfortable or out of place in his female body those words of “oh you’re just a rough country filly” remained in his mind up until his later teenage years.
 
Growing up was… strange to say the least. Being gay wasnt as widely accepted in earth pony society so many kept that part hidden. Abel couldnt help the distress he felt as his female anatomy went through puberty and matured, internally he felt he was built all wrong but in his mind he couldnt be a male because he liked boys! This furthered his confusion. To make matters worse he was terrified over what Granny Smith and the rest of his family would think. He went a large portion of his life ignoring the internal winces he felt any time someone referred to him as his deadname or as a female.
 
Abel continued on with his life until his mid twenties, Granny Smith fell deathly ill and Abel could no longer hide being trans and gay. First he came out too Big Mac, who excepted him immediantly and the transition from female to male pronouns was immediate. Then he came out to Apple Bloom, the evening was met with happy tears and hugs. His friends were next and that was met with a movie night and talking about possible names, magic and hormone treatments, and Rarity already coming up with Abels new male wardrobe.
 
Finally he came up out to Granny Smith who was practically on her death bed. But he wasnt rejected, instead he was met with sudden laughter and a bonk on the head.  
“Why youngen’ I already knew sumethin’ was a stirren! Wanted ya’ll to come to me first rather than bein’ called out. But yer gender dont change the fact yer my rowdy grandcolt that I love. Now quit yer cryin’ and come give this tired sac o’ bones a hug!” The green earth pony chuckled, being met with a tearful hug from a very relieved Abel.
 
Shortly after Granny Smiths passing AJ inherits the farm and marries Troubleshoes. Together TS bears them 8 children.
