Because shooting magical blasts isn't as "violent," and because the fight didn't solve the conflict. (Obviously, they don't want to teach kiddies that "violence solves problems.")
 
In fact according to Megan McCarthy Hasbro mandated during that sequence that _*"Twilight couldn't punch Tirek in the face,"_* (thate image of her saying this is on this site somewhere) so if they can't even do that, obviously they wouldn't be able to get away with something like this. (Especially, the blood.)
