Frankly, I’d prefer Rarity lose the spotlight than spend it being a bitch. Besides, she stole the episode as a supporting role anyhow. XD

Rarity is a character they have to be very careful with, and I’m glad they went this way. A small mistake could turn Rarity into Diamond Tiara. I still think it’s the single most amazing thing MLP:FiM did that a character with Rarity’s architype was successfully made into a completely lovable character. Hanna-Barbera would’ve made her into the comic relief and punching bag of the group. I, for one, welcome the protection of our stylish unicorn.

Sometimes an idea simply doesn’t work, but they made the mistake of forcing it anyway.

I have a solution: let there be 2 Rarity episodes in season 4, and no Spike episodes. Everybody wins.

Several things could have been better explained with Rarity, like his clumsiness (being smitten making him distracted/trying above his power), why he’d be “leaving” Twilight (true love (from Spike’s crush-POV :p) over surrogate-sisterly bond). The whole “dragon code” excuse could’ve been cut or implied that it’s just an excuse to hang around Rarity. Also, after the last few episodes being very strongly Rari x Spike, it’d have been a nice reminder that they’re still an adult pony and a kid with a crush. Flesh out that part of their relationship a bit more.
 
I agree that writing this with Rarity should’ve been easily winged by any decent writer.

No, you’re just being specially judgemental to Rarity, like pretty much every one of her haters.

Oh and if it was Rarity then it would’ve made sense why Spike made up the dragon honorable code.

No but if all the writers could come up with, after several rewrites, is to make Rarity a bitch then they’re doing a terrible job.

They could’ve simply rewrote her, is Williams that bad of a writer that she’s incapable of not writing Rarity as cruel? It would’ve been simpler to change Rarity’s characterization than to completely replace her with Applejack.  
And why couldn’t they have wrote a nicer Rarity? Applejack wasn’t mean towards Spike at all.  
I feel that we’re not getting the whole story, here.

That only proves that they don’t want to repeat old mistakes.  
Good for them it’s better to keep that things in check.  
It didn’t help with the episode but at least we were spared the great outrage at Rarity’s treatment this season (there is one already but fairly small).
