Description

Scootaloo will be the first to admit - it took her awhile to accept the fact she would never naturally fly. As she reaches her teen years with wings still suited for a filly of six, Scootaloo is finally taken to a specialist by her aunts. There, it is confirmed that she has permanent wing dysplasia. Her wings, even if they grew any larger, would never be strong enough to carry her. While unsurprised, Scootaloo is deeply saddened over the news. However, it does lead to the normally brash and straightforward Rumble to approach her with sympathy (after getting a few tips from Soarin) and comfort her. He’s actually kinda nice. Flash forward a few years - Scootaloo is now a mare with stunted wings, married to Rumble the Wonderbolt, and is a mother to little Proud Skies.

Sky wasn’t the most…energetic infant. He loved to play with his friends, but was also content to sit quietly and play with his blocks or just sit outside for hours. Thus, his “spark” (the incident in which all pegasus infants fly for the first time) didn’t quite…show up. Scootaloo is reassured by quite a few doctors that there is nothing wrong with her son, and he is in perfect health. Some foals just don’t “spark” as soon as others. While Scoots kept imagining all that she went through because of her disability, she constantly reassured her son that no matter what the future held, she adored him (though he didn’t quite understand her sentiments). However, she didn’t have to worry for long. One quiet morning, Scootaloo and Sky find themselves in the kitchen together, mom studying reports of a troubled colt in need of help, son coloring and feeling like a snack would be appropriate.

The next think Scootaloo knows, her son is standing at the base of the fridge, looking intently at the cookie jar on top of it. Before she could do a thing, her son wriggles his rump, starts giving a few good practice flaps, and then gently rises into the air. For the first time in his life, Proud Skies flies to the top of the fridge, before turning back to his mother. He expectantly taps the cookie jar, making sure he’s got mom’s permission. She can only give a small nod, a jumble of emotions rushing over her as her little puff cloud gets his cookie, realizes he doesn’t know how to land, and finds himself content to sit atop the fridge. The delighted pegasus quickly helps the colt down and gives him the biggest hug she can. Sky is very confused, but pleased the action earned him a cookie and some snuggles. While Scootaloo knows there will be hurdles as a parent down the line - ones that would be easy, and ones that wouldn’t - she also knows that no matter what, they are a team and will take them head-on…together.
