Why are people obsessed with hating Spike and enjoy seeing him get hurt and abused by other characters from the show?
That’s the real question you Spike haters should be asking your selves.
But this is largely on a subtextual level, on the text level, on what the show appears to want to say about him… it’s mostly ignored. Including sometimes times when the plot seems to be about his otherness? It’s very strange.
And, well, the people who related to this outsiderness tend to be downtrodden nerdlings who felt like they never fit in socially at school or what not. Those are the fans that become obsessed with Spike. I mean, hell, that describes me and my onetime obsession with the character.
This is what the article should have been. You just gave all the reason anyone needs.
If your explanation for why you like a children’s cartoon character has to get political you’re doing something wrong.
Edit: yup, read the article and suffered for it. Most of the points are typical projecting, one of them is flat out wrong considering how much slapstick the mane six get into and the politics makes absolutely zero sense. (There’s no evidence Twilight gets paid either, even different ponies treat each other like “second class citizens”, etc.) Don’t try to apply adult logic to a kids show, just don’t. It won’t work and you’ll just look like an obsessed weirdo.

Unhealthy Trixie obsession,
Unhealthy Luna obsession,
And, of course, unhealthy Fluttershy obsession.
Equestria Daily is proud to present: ‘Why are people obsessed with Spike?’
Especially Seth’s articles.
Basically as much reason as any character in the show has to be obsessed over.
