I think NMM is more a of a secondary personality that magically emerged from Lunas negative feelings, like a more literal split personality that took control of the body, and in order for Luna to take control back she needed magical intervention.
I agree about NMM however I am not so sure about the POS, is stygion and the shadow were really connected or was is just possession? Its up to our interpretation. I do think midnight reformed. As for the real Grogar, we don’t know what happened to him after he lost, maybe he decided to give up on world domination, maybe he is imprisoned somewhere or maybe he died(got killed perhaps).
Nightmare Moon is not debatable because she was the evil version of Princess Luna that possibly possessed her.
Nightmare Moon is remained evil. And so was her sister Daybreaker. They were just evil versions of Celestia and Luna that possibly possessed them. Even the Pony of Shadows, Midnight Sparkle, the Dazzlings, Rabia, Ira, and their Umbrum army, Cosmos, Princess Eris, Nightmare Star, Mane-iac Mayhem and her League of Villainy, the Pseudocorns, Big Boy and Runt, the Tantabus, the Windigos, Grogar, etc… remained evil.
