Aye, usually there were film rules of “this is the character we are following so they can’t die”. THEM is like “nope.”
Something else I like about “THEM” in retrospect was how they didn’t play by the usual Hollywood rules. James Arness’ character, the guy who we’ve been siding with since the start of the movie, dies right before the end. Very rare in Hollywood films of the time.
YES! “THEM” was literally what James Cameron sourced to make Aliens… Which makes both movies mentioned in this post remakes of older films. That’s not to say James Cameron’s films are bad, but the performances and singular lines really do feel more like “this is a movie” instead of “this is a group of friends and you’re with them.”
It’s amazing how much the dialogue and characterization make the Howard Hawks ‘Thing’ into such a great movie. All the more so when those are things that don’t cost any extra money, you just need competent acting and directing along with someone who knows how to use the English language in speech.
Much like another 50’s fave of mine, ‘Them’. The dialogue alone in that movie is a delight:
“The nest must be thoroughly saturated by now.”
“Boy, if I can still raise an arm after getting back I’m gonna show you just how well saturated I can get!”

A couple honest chuckles, extremely good suspense, and out of nowhere moments of terror. Plus the overlapping dialogue. Really does make you feel like you’re one of the crew.

And yes, we should all hail Mothra. The queen of monsters! No, the goddess of the world!
The Thing From Another Wold was indeed a really good film. John Carpenter’s version was good too, though I liked the original more.
