To be honest if it hadn’t had ponies in it I would most likely not have read it. So it’s at least half right. But I kinda think it was an epic read. Long as get out, disturbing at times too, but an epic read.
Don’t get me wrong trolling is fine and natural. But it gives me the impression of a whiny tone when I read it.
So, whatcha mean is, you like that FoE brought bronies into the Fallout fold, but would rather talk about the actual games than the fanfic?
What u gunna do, OP?
Need to give them a hacksaw to cleave apart those compounds-what-shouldn’t-be-compounds.
>>implying everything Shatner has written isn’t just “This is this episode of this other Trek series with myself as the focal character”
also you forget that the LCD has increased heavily in sci-fi as of late. Throw random lesbians in for instant success.
And a big ol’ fuck you very much to Whedon for that, by the way.
Fallout is a bitterly satirical dark comedy that examines the absurdity of war and all the foibles and follies inherent to the human condition. It’s like something that would come out of the mind of Stanley Kubrick or Joseph Heller.
Fallout Equestria and its spinoffs are more like something you’d see in a Tarantino, Whedon, Verhoeven or Cronenberg film. Exploitative, pulpy, B-movie-esque snuff that is less about philosophizing and more about taking the class struggles from the MLP:FiM universe and pushing them out to their logical extreme by thrusting the various species from MLP:FiM into an unrelentingly brutal setting and examining their inequalities under a lens of constant strife and decay.
Prose-wise, it’s pretty much like any other mediocre fanfiction. Passable “edgy” YA Lit-level writing. Very straightforward. Occasionally entertaining, if you give it a chance, and if you’re willing to bring yourself down to its level. I have no idea how these fics could have so many typos and grammatical issues when their authors have got massive teams of editors at their back, but I guess that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.
The actual plots in these stories are heavily padded for length, and their overall quality follows a sort of bell curve, starting out moderately crappy, peaking near the middle, and then losing steam at the end.
The world-building is okay. Sometimes inconsistent and a little bit loopy, but otherwise it’s fine. The fact that it’s a crossover between Fallout and MLP:FiM puts it in a uniquely transgressive category. In fact, the sheer wrongness of it is part of the allure.
If you’re like me, then you’ve probably learned how to turn off your brain and just sit back and enjoy the ride. FoE and its side stories are great for that.
I am doubtful that FOE would sell if it were not for the novelty of it being about ponies, because it is basically just someone writing a narrative around their experience playing a fallout game. If you’ve played the fallout games already, there’s nothing in FOE that you haven already experienced more effectively in the games, so the real draw of it is the fact that it’s a crossover.
So just remove ponies.
Just look at the reams and reams of Star Trek and Wing Commander novels.
Actually, Fifty Shades of Gray is the exception to that. It was a Twilight fanfic, but after removing all the Twilight references the writer got it published and now it’s being made into a movie.
Unlike Fifty Shades of Gray though, FOE infringes on the IP of TWO franchises, and does so much more directly than Fifty Shades. so if Kkat was to re-write it for mainstream publishing she would have to get rid of all the ponies and all of the Fallout references, and while Fifty Shades had very little in common with Twilight other than the character names, the bulk of FOE is a series of cut-and-paste events taken from the Fallout games.
Since FOE is defined by the fact that it is re-creates the Fallout universe but with Ponies, in order for Kkat to make it acceptable for a publisher, about 80% of it would have to be scrapped. Then again, since 80% of the story is filler, that might not be so bad, but without the pony or Fallout content no-one would read it.
Don’t you have something better to do with your time than whine because you didn’t like a fanfic?
