But Babs’ high energy is the same as Pinkie’s.
@Azerdoe
The ponies don’t age the same way people do. It’s their level of maturity and how much we’ve seen them grow as characters that gives some of us the impression that they’re the same age as the student 6.
“At least that’s how I interpret this.” I appreciate that you acknowledge it as an interpretation.
“Also, even in Equestria Girls, where the main characters are teens, the Cutie Mark Crusaders are also clearly younger than the rest of the Mane Six, roughly at early middle school age.” Despite going to Canterlot HIGH school.
“Rather, they might be the ponies that the younger target audience looks up to. And I think that is a really neat idea, since it gives kids a group that they can relate to.” Kids don’t care about the age of the characters they like. When I was really little one of the characters I related to the most was 100 years old! And why wouldn’t kids relate to the Mane 6? The CMC were there to be good characters, not to pander to a demographic. Now can we please get back on topic?
Yeah, I will just agree with you on this one. Also, even in Equestria Girls, where the main characters are teens, the Cutie Mark Crusaders are also clearly younger than the rest of the Mane Six, roughly at early middle school age.
Yes, they mature over time, which I do like a lot about them, but I don’t think the showrunners intended for them to be seen as teenagers. Rather, they might be the ponies that the younger target audience looks up to. And I think that is a really neat idea, since it gives kids a group that they can relate to.
How about Fluttershy in the cutiemark retelling episode where she’s clearly in her teens with her body type. Typically foals have the short, stumpy body like Applebloom etc. But teen ponies have much longer legs and a bit more defining features that’ll be carried over into adulthood. We see both Fluttershy and AJ share these taller bodies as teens as well as more defining features (extra freckles and longer hair for AJ, adult wings and long tail for Fluttershy respectively).
With Sandbar, he shares the same body type as those two, indicating that he’s in his teens at the very least. He’s by no means a foal, but not a fully grown stallion either. He’s somewhere in between.
At least that’s how I interpret this.
@Enmity1498
Not sure if you agree with me in this, but feel free to add.
Edited
Not a reliable indicator.
Yeah, no. They are definitely older. Just take a look at how much taller Sandbar is compared to AppleBloom, Sweetie Belle, or Scootaloo.
You don’t have to read the comments you know. You could mute the post. In any case out of respect, I’ll stop.
The CMC seem the same age as the Student 6 to me.
@Enmity1498
You should probably move this discussion somewhere else at this point, since you’re not even talking about the image at this point. It’s also annoying as an Equestria Girls fan.
Brilliant idea! That’s actually what I was hoping for when EQG was announced. That the girls would be teachers or otherwise school advisors that help others learn about friendship. That way it doesn’t break the established status quo, it keeps in line with the lessons the girls had already learned in the pony world and gives newer fans more relatability to both the mane six and student six where the mane six use their own life experience to tell stories that might relate to whatever the conflict of the episode is about, and tell us how they overcame it through friendship. Pretty much what the Friendship academy is all about but years before it became a thing.
I really like your idea, I wish they went with it instead of what we got 🤦🏾♂️
You could make the argument that High School Musical was quite popular, so much so that a TV series was made for Disney+ based on the original movie. So it makes sense that Hasbro would try to go after that series and copy it.
Also, I do agree that having the Student Six (or a similar new cast) alone in that setting would be very jarring, and wouldn’t fit in to the series. There are two ways that you can remedy this, though: 1)have the Mane Six be the mentors for the Student Six, just as they were in FiM. That way they can still be adults in the human world and the focus could be on the students. 2) You could eliminate the high school concept entirely and have the Mane Six be enrolled in a college, instead. That way they could be adults and still be in an educational setting.
Do you think the new cast could sell the franchise though? EQG came right after S3 finale and alicorn twilight was revealed. Having a brand new cast in a completely alternate dimension but still under the MLP line would be jarring to say the least. Sure, if the Student 6 were established early on then it could work. But when EQG was first aired? Idk..
The whole idea just screams “Disney” to me akin to Highschool Musical. MLP has its songs, it has its musical numbers, but the main focus is learning friendship and slice of life experiences. It’s not about the “fish out of water” troupe that’s plagued media for generations. Hell the very first episode already did that troupe and moved on, so why do it again with the exact same character? Makes no sense to me.
Honestly, I think that the Student Six makes more sense if you’re talking about a ‘high school’ group in FiM. I mean, it isn’t like Twilight’s School of Friendship was supposed to be an elementary or middle school. After all, the CMC were elementary school aged and they were definitely younger than the Student Six. So as such, the Student Six were a great example of what Hasbro should have done when making Equestria Girls: create a brand new cast of characters that we can watch grow up and become more experienced over time.
I didn’t realise they de-aged Trevor as well. How in the heck can he be a fighter pilot then? Lol the logic in trying to make these iconic adult heroes into teens is baffling.
But yeah with Twilight it makes sense what you’re saying. She’s basically the ultimate authority in her world. A fully grown celestial alicorn with the responsibility of not only being the principal of the magic academy, but also the protector of the whole country/world. With such high and lofty expectations, being turned into a teen really diminishes the importance of her ascension a great deal. Heck even before she became ruler, turning into a teen regardless makes no sense. But it is what the writers and directors wanted so whatever 🤷🏾♂️
@Enmity1498
The Teen Titan analogy makes perfect sense in this hypothetical scenario. With them as you said, they start off as a bunch of misfit, insecure teens who are just now exploring their roles in life and then grow into becoming heroes of the world. With the mane 6 however, it’s very clear they are all adult people who have their goals achieved for the most part, are living adequately in their own homes, have stable relationships and have a great deal of responsibility for their daytime work. This is before they even came together to defeat Nightmare Moon. The six of them have demonstrated that they are competent and independent. Much like a adult would be. So why make them ALL go to high school in EQG? I really don’t get it even after six years…
@Azerdoe
I agree with both of your sentiments regarding de-aging characters for a show. Honestly, this is why I like groups such as the Teen Titans and Young Justice so much: they start out as inexperienced teens, yes, but you can see them grow throughout the course of the comics. And these days both groups are highly experienced with multiple different rosters of characters. Heck, at least two of them eventually joined the Justice League in the form of Cyborg and Nightwing from Teen Titans!
In short, introducing new characters and watching them grow is a better way to develop a ‘high school’ group as opposed to de-aging existing characters, as that removes all development for them.
That’s only for that specific show. Diana in every other depiction is definitely an adult and her hooking up with Batman and Superman is definitely less weird.
I agree with the high school thing though. Using what I just said as an example, Diana can’t have relationship with Batman or Superman because she is a lot younger, even though they have been an iconic trio in every other version. They also de-aged Steve Trevor for her to have this weird love struck reaction to him. It just feels kind of weird. On the pony side, Twilight has been a headmaster and is a world-leader now while her human counterpart was still a student when the pony was basically in the same position as Principal Celestia and now even higher. It kind of diminishes the human six’s achievements because the ponies are just way too successful on the other side.
Mini tangent: Personally I really hate the whole “high school heroes” cliche in comics and in EQG. The characters should be adults and should act like adults. You can have relatable situations with adult characters that both young children and teens can understand, it doesn’t always have to be regressed to a younger state. That’s why I feel EQG fails terribly at. There’s no need to make the cast teenagers or for them to attend high school. Not when they have been proven to be competent, independent and responsible enough to look after themselves just fine as ponies. It really alienates me to see them as teens as it makes no sense, regardless of how people tried to justify it.
But I digress. On how Diana is technically a child in Amazon years makes sense (although it does make it weird knowing that she sleeps with Batman and Superman despite being a child in her own culture 👀). I just found it interesting how that feature was passed onto Twilight for this picture specifically. The theory of her being the Alicorn version of her also makes sense, so I like it 👍🏾
Edited
In DC Superhero Girls specifically, the show this image is based on, Wonder Woman only looks older and taller than the rest of the cast but apparently to the Amazons she is not even old enough to be considered an adult. So in a way she is just a high school girl with a growth spurt. She looks old but is still really young in Aazon year. Diana could still be older than the other girls though because she’s usually hundred or thousand years old in the comics. She is a demi-goddess after all.
Plus Twilight has been growing taller ever since she became an Alicorn, so it’s not too far-fetched to make her the tallest character.
Hmmm, you are right. Didn’t really think about that perspective. Nice theory 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Well, if you think about it, Twi is taking the place of Wonder Woman, and Wonder Woman in the comics is significantly older than all of the other characters shown here. So it makes perfect sense for Twi to have an older appearance to reflect that (though, all things considered, I feel like Celestia would have made more sense as Wonder Woman than Twilight).
In any case, love the artwork and style as always 👍🏾😊
